Howick Hornets keep finals hopes alive in Auckland Women’s Premiership

The Howick Hornets have kept their Finals hopes alive with an impressive win over Taniwharau in the Auckland Women’s Premiership over the weekend.

AUCKLAND WOMEN’S PREMIERSHIP
Howick 36 – 6 Taniwharau

Howick continue to roll with a late push into the playoff picture. Stringing together impressive wins they now sit one win out of the top four. Charlette Butler crossed early for the Waikato side in this match up, but it was all one-way traffic after that, including a double from Melvina Weilert to kick off the Hornet scoring. The following five tries helped Howick run away and take another step towards a possible playoff berth.

Manurewa 60 – 6 Otahuhu
A twelve try occasion for the wahine from Manurewa as they solidify their position as Premiership contenders. Four Marlin players took home doubles – Harano Te Iringa, Maitua Feterika, Terehia Matua and Mackenzie Wiki. They now look ahead to a tough test against an undefeated Pt Chevalier side that currently tops the competition.

Pt Chevalier 24 – 8 Otara
Pt Chevalier continue there undefeated run this week driven by a standout performance from Kiwi Fern Katelyn Vaha’akolo who got herself a double. Va’anessa Molia-Fraser also got two tries of her own, helping the Pirates get the win against a strong Otara side that sits in the current playoff picture.

Richmond 34 – 20 Ponsonby
Ponsonby continue their struggles, this time falling to the Richmond Roses that have leap frogged into third place. Match ups between these teams grouping in the middle of the standings will prove crucial to whether they will qualify for finals footy. Doubles to Keri Ratima and Rowena Meleisea helped the Roses win the central city clash.

AUCKLAND WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP
Manurewa 60 – 0 Glenora

The Manurewa club have flexed their strength in the Women’s competitions with two dominant wins over the same weekend. With this win the Championship team now leapfrog the Bears into third position in a competition where no team is able to grasp certainty amongst the evenly matched teams. The side even scored twelve tries in the contest, the exact same as their Premiership counterparts.

Marist 82 – 8 Pukekohe
The competition leading Marist Saints have kept hold of first position with an impressive outing against the Pukekohe Pythons. A Chantelle Schofield hat-trick saw the side run up a score against a hearty south Auckland side that continues to show up despite low playing numbers. The Pythons will look to improve ahead of facing the other top team of Manukau next week.
