Despite the loss of key players to the Kiwi Ferns side, the Manurewa Marlins showed why they are one of the top teams in the Auckland Women’s Premiership with a dominant win over Taniwharau.
AUCKLAND WOMEN’S PREMIERSHIP
Manurewa 46 – 16 Taniwharau
Manurewa didn’t let the absence of their Kiwi Fern presence prevent them from getting the job done against Taniwharau. Taniwharau were coming off a big win against Ponsonby in round six and were the first to score but a Mackenzie Wiki hat-trick helped the south Auckland side get the two points comfortably.
Otara 36 – 14 Howick
A close contest throughout the first forty, Otara and Howick couldn’t be separated going into half-time level at 10-a piece. Aketuke Mckinley-Sadaraka and Annelise Biddle were try-scoring machines for the Scorpion Stingers, tallying up five tries between them. Otara got the job done in the second forty scoring five tries evenly spread throughout the second half to the Hornets solo try after the break
Pt Chevalier 32 – 4 Ponsonby
Both teams had players on international duties this weekend in this top of the table clash between the two central Auckland rivals. Competition leaders, Pt Chevalier proved too strong for the Ponies at Victoria Park, with Ewai Tupaea, Capri Paekau and Pamela McHardy all standing out for the side. The Pirates have now gone undefeated through the first clash with each of the other seven Premiership sides.
Richmond 26 – 6 Otahuhu (Defaulted)
Richmond got back to winning ways following two close losses. Unfortunately, Otahuhu had to default at halftime after dropping to twelve players. Fullback Keri Ratima stood out for the Roses scoring two tries. Strong running and a solid performance from the middles in Shannon Leota and Kahurina Cassidy helped Richmond build a twenty point lead in the forty minutes of play.
AUCKLAND WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP
Manukau 26 – 22 Glenora
The Women’s Championship continues to provide tight, quality match ups each week with another close contest between the Magpies and Bears. Manukau were first to cross before Glenora came powering back to take the lead and hold it through until the final twenty minutes. Manukau captain Paulina Teraitua-Siaosi directed the Magpies from the important 7 jersey and the side came back to score late and steal the win. Laumatau Inukiha’angana was a stand out for the Glenora Bears in the contest.
Manurewa 12 – 12 Marist
Defence was massive for both sides in this Championship match up with neither team leaking a try until Manurewa scored on the stroke of halftime. Marist levelled things up early in the second half through Christina Magele Mariner. Manurewa scored a try from 60 metres out to re-take the lead before Marist came back, hot on attack. Manurewa held strong, but the pressure mounted and Christina crossed again out wide before Chantelle Schofield snuck the conversion over to leave everything tied up heading towards the final whistle.
